History of the compass

Wouldn't a "history of the compass" section be great and fascinating? Anyone have that info. or a resource?

Intro

Doesn't a human "take a bearing" on a compass, rather than the compass itself? Should it be that a compass "displays a bearing"? --Robert W King 16:12, 12 September 2007 (CDT)
