The typical student is an Army [[major]], although there are students from other U.S. military services, government civilians in the national security area, and foreign military officers. In practice, graduation from CGSC is a requirement for promotion to [[colonel]] and above.
 
While it is best known for the resident program, there is a distance learning program. The School of Advanced Military Studies offers an additional honors program following the CGSC course.
