Pope John II, Latin Ioannes, original name Mercùrio (born 470, Rome–died 8 May 535, Rome), was the 56th Pope, elected on 2 January 533 and reigning until his death on 8 May 535. He is the first pope to take a regnal name upon rising to the Chair of Saint Peter, believing it inappropriate to reign bearing the name of a pagan god.
