This article refers to the article of clothing. For animal coats, see coat (animal). For dog coats, see coat (dog).
A coat is an outer garment. Coats protect the wearer from the elements and are worn over other items of clothing. Coats usually button, but they may also be closed with zippers, snaps or other fasteners.
