The sport of football in Argentina is administered by the Argentine Football Association (Asociación del Fútbol Argentino; AFA). Argentina became a member of FIFA in 1912 and was a founder member of CONMEBOL in 1916. The team were runners-up to Uruguay in the inaugural 1930 FIFA World Cup. They have won the tournament twice, in 1978 and 1986. Among the most famous Argentine footballers are Diego Maradona, Gabriel Batistuta and Lionel Messi.
