I'm baffled by this sentence: "It was an amendment to the federal Constitution that would forbid the public funding of private, denominational schools while at the same time require Bible reading in the public schools."  I've reread the proposed amendment a couple of times and can't see anything at all in there that would require Bible reading in public schools.
