The place was first mentioned in 1086. In this year, the patriarch Udalric I of Aquileia founded a church and a monastery. In 1713, the Duke of Petači moved to Sežana, which became the administrative centre. After the first world war, Sežana became Italian, then between 1945 and 1947 it was under British rule, until becoming part of Yugoslavia.
