I'm not convinced this is a completely logical definition. My inclination would be to split into:
- 1978-1989 (Soviets leave)
- Charlie Wilson would fit here as Operation CYCLONE
- Afghan civil war 1989-1992 (Taliban take control)
- Taliban period 1992-2001
- Afghanistan War (2001-)
- Afghanistan War (2001-), major combat phase
- International Security Assistance Force (I'd really like a better name for the current situation, especially with an Afghan government)
