The Middle Ages refers to anytime between the fall of the western Roman Empire and the Renaissance, a rebirth of renewal of the culture, arts and principles of the Ancient Roman Empire throughout Europe but primarily in Italy. The Middle Ages is often broken up into three distinct phases:
- The Early Middle Age period, or dark age. (5th-10th century)
- The High Middle age period. (11th-13th century)
- The Late Middle Age period. (13th-15th century)
