A star that increases rapidly in brightness; there are two main types: ordinary novae, and supernovae, which are much bigger and rarer.
A variable star in the class of cataclysmic variable stars. The normally very faint star once in a time erupts in an immense explosion raising the brightness a thousand to tens of million times.
 
Similar but unrelated to supernovae.
