When the last missionary at Nuestra Señora de la Soledad (Fr. Vicente Francisco de Sarría) died in 1835, his body was carried on a litter by loyal neophytes to Mission San Antonio de Padua, some 25 miles away. The remaining neophytes at the Soledad mission left soon after the priest died and it became apparent there would be no replacement.(PD) Photo: United States Navy
