The metropolitan area of Columbus is actually smaller in population than those of the other two largest cities in Ohio, Cleveland and Cincinnati.  This is because of an aggressive annexation policy dating back to the 1950s, in which the city repeatedly incorporated growing suburbs and areas.  It nonetheless has many suburbs, such as Westerville, Dublin, Ohio, and Bexley.
