Polar Penguins -- photo

Hi John, fascinating article, much that I hadn't known!

Still, it seems to me slightly problematic that CZ now has two articles on relatively ancillary issues relating to penguins (and an approved article on "Tux" the penguin), but no main entry on the Penguin yet. Even if it's a modest beginning, a main entry would be useful as a starting point. Right now, people searching CZ for penguins may be puzzled to find these two entries and no main entry, and although both are serious in tone, may mistake them for spoof entries at first. Knowing that at least some people at this point are probing CZ for weak or odd spots, I do think about how we "look" to outsiders just now, even though eventually I don't think it will matter once our database reaches truly encyclopdic proportions! If you would be so good as to start a main entry on Penguin, I would be happy to contribute something to it, and hope others will as well.

Also, do you have any images of these attempts to establish Penguins in the Arctic? Having the image of the emperor penguin (same as in the Penguins and aircraft entry) seems a bit misleading, even though the caption corrects this impression. Russell Potter 10:08, 24 May 2007 (CDT)

If someone get's Penguin going along well, I'll play image hound. Stephen Ewen 17:40, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
I'm not sure how many people will be looking for penguins on CZ at the moment, but I take your point. I'll try to get Penguin going. Also, I don't think the pic is so misleading, as it's of a king penguin, the type that was release into the Arctic. Finally, no, I don't have a pic but would love to dig one out from somewhere. It is a long time ago. John Stephenson 02:57, 25 May 2007 (CDT)

Good move!

This article now makes a great deal more sense to me -- more "encompassing" and also more "specific"! Russell Potter 22:23, 25 May 2007 (CDT)

First sentence

On revisiting this page, I thought that the opening sentece ought to be slightly recast. After all, even though the entry shows that there may well be some penguins living north of the equator, their numbers are small enough and uncertain enough that it's not really a total reversal of common opinion. The best function of this entry, I think, will be to add a modest corrective, and recount the quite interesting history of attempts to introduce the Penguin in the north ... bravo!

Interesting read. thank you! Tom Kelly 22:56, 27 May 2008 (CDT)
