A definition or brief description of Methotrexate.

An inhibitor of tetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase, which prevents the formation of tetrahydrofolate, necessary for synthesis of thymidylate, an essential component of DNA. Wide range of applications, including the treatment of cancer; autoimmune diseases (where it is considered a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug) including asthma, rheumatoid arthritis.
