DNA restriction enzymes (restriction endonucleases) are proteins that cut DNA at specific sequences. Each restriction enzyme is specific to a small (commonly 4-6 base pair) sequence. These enzymes can be used to cut DNA into fragments in a specific and repeatable fashion.
