Manhattan is an island and a borough of New York City, having matching boundaries with New York County. The island is limited by Hudson River in the west and East River in the east. It has a population of 1,537,195 and an area of 59.47 km² (22.96 miles²). Manhattan is the most important of New York City's five boroughs.
