Gardez is the capital of Paktia Province in Afghanistan, in mountains 60 miles south of Kabul and 50 miles west of the border with Pakistan. It holds the headquarters of the Afghan National Armys 203rd Corps and is in the International Security Assistance Force's Regional Command East.

Forward Operating Base Gardez, west of the city, is manned by US and Czech combat troops, as well as a Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT). [1]

Roads are have been built to Khost and Ghazni. From Khost, another road goes to Kabul, the national capital. [2] The roads are not secure and need substantial patrolling. [3]
