The Berlin Wall (German: Berliner Mauer) was a barrier separating West Berlin from East Berlin and the rest of East Germany.
The construction of the wall began on August 13, 1961. Its fall began in 1989.
The East German government announced on November 9, 1989, that entry to West Berlin would be permitted.
With the fall of the Berlin Wall began the process of German reunification. German reunification officially occurred on October 3, 1990. The date is a national holiday in Germany.
