Talk:Edinburgh
Looks like a beautiful city
A great place to be from! --D. Matt Innis 12:02, 9 January 2008 (CST)
Burke and Hare
William Burke (1792-1829) and William Hare (1904-ca 1860)
The article says that Burke was hanged in 1828, which is correct? I assume Hare is 1804? Chris Day (talk) 11:02, 10 January 2008 (CST)
RLS
I note you mention Deacon Brodie inspired RLS to write Jekyll and Hyde. There is an Island in the centre of the pond at Queens Street gardens that was the inspiration for Treasure Island, that might be of interest to add in there too? Possibly in the new town section? Also worth adding is the colonies were built by the craftsmen who built the New Town. Chris Day (talk) 11:02, 10 January 2008 (CST) (some sources for the Treasure island inspiration but probably need a better one Scotsman Herald Photo of island)
Other things off the top of my head
- Edinburgh Academy, Heriots, Fettes, etc might be mentioned. This high concentration of private schools seems quite unique (I could be wrong). Possibly in the wealthy city.
- Meadows was the mass burial ground for the plague victims. The pitch and putt by the Golf pub is reputed to be the first place golf was ever played. [edit: according to this reference the mass burial is the hand me down version of the story]
- Should the the Observatory get a mention somewhere? And possibly the density of golf courses which seems on the high side for an average city.
- Meadowbank, Hearts and Hibs should be in there somewhere.
- And the Seven Hills of Edinburgh should be in there too.
- The one-o-clock gun
- Greyfriars Bobby
- Rose street and Grassmarket might be worth a mention with respect to pubs, and a nod to the Sheep's Heid Inn, is it really Scotlands oldest pub, as they claim? The breweries, especially due the he smell!
- Radical road, especially with respect to Huttons unconformity in the quarry.
I'm sure there is a lot more but these seem like obvious ommisions for someone trying to get a flavor of the city. Chris Day (talk) 11:02, 10 January 2008 (CST)
Many thanks Chris, please feel free to pitch in. I guess the sections on Musems, Hotels, Tourist attractions could all go to subpages which might start to make it feel less intimidating. Any help most welcome, I'm running out of steam.Gareth Leng 11:19, 10 January 2008 (CST)
What you have so far is a great read. I agree we should get the touristy stuff into subpages. Also, most of my comments above are "local knowledge" I'd have to get sources for them, I already found my plague comment is exaggerated. Chris Day (talk) 11:46, 10 January 2008 (CST)
Excellent article
Great work! I'd add in the Camera Obscura, maybe, to the tourist attractions? Anton Sweeney 18:38, 10 January 2008 (CST)
- Thanks for the reminder, done, and will add a comment on it in due courseGareth Leng
