Alexandre Dumas the Elder (1806-1876) is a famous French author born at Villers-Cotterets.

Early Life

Dumas was the son of a creole. He lost his father at the age of 4.

Adult Life

Dumas came to Paris to seek his fortune, where he soon made his mark. He reached his climax with "Monte Cristo" in 1844, and the "Three Musketeers" (1845). He was unhappy with his wife. He died at Dieppe with his physical and mental health broken, where his son and daughter attended to him.
