J. Robin Warren (1937-), an Australian pathologist and researcher, received the 2005 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, jointly awarded to Warren and his colleague BNarry Marshall for discovering the role of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori in gastrointestinal disease. They discovered that the majority of ulcers of the stomach and duodenum are not caused by stress or other commonly attributed factors, but by a specific infection that was usually curable with oral antibiotic therapy.
