Hertz is a measure of how frequently something changes state. Something that changes state once per second oscillates at one hertz.
The frequency of sound waves are sometimes measured in hertz, or kilohertz -- thousands of cycles per second.
The speed of computer clocks is often expressed in megahertz -- millions of cycles per second.
