The uncle of James Bedell McKean, a Representative and a Senator from Pennsylvania; born in Kishocaquillas Valley in Huntington County, Pa., April 7, 1787; attended the common schools; engaged in mercantile pursuits in Burlington, Pa.; member of the board of commissioners for Bradford County in 1814; member, State house of representatives 1815-1819; served in the State militia as major general; elected to the Eighteenth, Nineteenth, and Twentieth Congresses (March 4, 1823-March 3, 1829); chairman, Committee on Post Office and Post Roads (Twentieth Congress); member, State senate 1829-1830; presidential elector on the Democratic ticket in 1832; elected as a Jacksonian (later Democrat) to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1833, to March 3, 1839; chairman, Committee to Audit and Control the Contingent Expenses (Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth Congresses); died in West Burlington, Bradford County, Pa., December 14, 1841; interment in the Old Church Cemetery in the eastern part of West Burlington Township.
