Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are a group of academc fields which are often treated together in education policy and political decision-making. Although STEM the term 'science', typically this means the formal and natural sciences rather than social science: e.g. maths, logic, statistics; and physics, biology and chemistry. Engineering takes principles from these scientific subjects to devise practical solutions to problems.
