Correction

The text conflated the Contras with the Sandanistas. The contras were the opposition, generally recognized as little more than thugs, hired by the CIA. The Sandanistas had been underground rebels, when Nicaragua was ruled by a right wing dictator, but they were eventually legitimately elected. During the Reagan administration the Sandanista Party was the legitimately elected government of Nicaragua.
