Albert Arnold Gore Jr. (born March 31, 1948) is a former United States Senator from Tennessee and the 45th Vice President of the United States. After serving two terms under President Bill Clinton, Gore was the Democratic Party's nominee in the 2000 election, where he faced a close, and highly-disputed loss to Texas Governor George W. Bush. Gore gained prominence as a vocal opponent to the Bush administration's policies in the War on Terror, and for his efforts to combat global warming. An Inconvenient Truth, a feature film with Gore discussing global warming, won the 2007 Academy Award for "Best Documentary" and Gore was a co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for his work on climate change. Gore has stated that he has no plans to re-enter politics. He was the subject of a large but unsuccessful grassroots petition effort for him to seek the nomination of the Democratic Party in the 2008 presidential election.
