My primary interest is in filmmaking technologies and techniques. I graduated with a B.A. from Johns Hopkins as a Film and Media Studies major with honors in 2003, and subsequently received a Masters studying Filmmaking with a specialization in cinematography at the London Film School in 2007.
Career-wise, I began shooting film in 2001 on amateur projects, eventually progressing to low-budget music videos (2003) before focusing on cinematography professionally. I entered the pro film industry in 2005 as a camera trainee and have worked as a camera assistant ever since. I have also acted as director of photography (DP) on several short projects, and have extensive experience both as a DP and camera assistant mainly on pro-level film formats and film equipment, as well as HD video.
My prior work experience also included regular part-time work as a projectionist; this work was mainly at the London Film School, although I also was given several months of training in a commercial booth (Institute of Contemporary Arts) and have some limited experience in preview theater projection (Moving Picture Company). All of these afforded me a great range of different formats and unique characteristics to familiarize with and study in greater detail.
I have always been a voracious researcher, and find this absolutely essential in my field, where mountains of both technical and creative reference exist. This work consists of a multi-faceted mix of reference texts, on-site facility examination, practical proficiency, trade shows, industry seminars, social discussion, testing, and personal experience and experimentation.
