Academia

Academia is a broad term, generally encompassing institutions of higher learning, their faculty, and their students. The term may include research institutions without a major educational role, such as think tanks, industrial and government laboratories, etc. Another optional component are secondary schools (North America), gymnasiums {Europe), etc.

The term comes from akadēmeia, the grove of Akadēmos, a legendary Greek figure.
