Polar Operational Environmental Satellite [r]: A U.S. civilian government satellite system, which provides nonimaging and environmental information from polar orbit, for applications including weather, forest fire and volcanic alerts, vegetation analysis, and oceanic temperature measurement; distinct from the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System that is civil-military
